Abstract

The article gives a brief overview of the contribution of genetic engineering to the advancement of textile science. The most important applications highlighted are in the enzyme finishing of textiles; genetic improvement of cotton; yield/quality enhancements in wool, and fibre identification using recombinant DNA techniques. Major fibre producers are also active in developing fibres from renewable sources using genetic engineering methods.
