Abstract
A 0.8 acre salt gradient solar pond has been operating in El Paso in conjunction with The University of Texas at El Paso, Bruce Foods Corporation, the Department of Interior, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the State of Texas to examine applications of solar ponds for process heat production, electricity production and water desalting. Recent emphasis has been on waste concentration using the thermal energy of the solar pond to drive multi-stage/evaporation equipment capable of concentrating salt brine wastes while delivering fresh water. This paper outlines the operation of a salt gradient solar pond, the research development and demonstration project underway in El Paso, Texas and the potential applications of solar ponds in the oil industry.
