A discrete, hierarchically-structured population model

Abstract

A discrete-time, hierarchical model with either age, size, or stage structure in which the birth rate of each individual depends on the dynamically varying resource is studied. It is shown that the population becomes extinct if the inherent net reproductive number n is less than 1. The population can have long time survival if n > 1.
