N2 - Solid-state drives (SSDs) bring a fundamental change to the landscape of storage systems and are generally agreed as the replacement of hard-disk drives (HDDs) in the future. Benchmarking is used extensively to measure and compare the performance of storage systems. However, conventional benchmarks designed for spinning HDDs are not sufficient for benchmarking SSDs, and do not show insights of the measurement well. There is a need to design and develop benchmarks specifically for SSDs and measure the features comprehensively. Such benchmarks are useful in many scenarios, such as assisting the selection and deployment of SSD-based storage systems, evaluating the new design of SSDs, identifying the strengths and weakness of an SSD and finding the best workload for it, etc. We propose a Comprehensive Benchmark Suite for SSDs (CBS-SSD) to benchmark and measure the features of SSDs thoroughly. This study presents the initial design, implementation, and evaluation of CBSSSD. We believe that the proposed CBS-SSD is a more suitable benchmark suite for SSDs than existing benchmarks, and it will have an impact in the data-intensive high-performance computing era.
