Abstract

A performance at the International Society of Bassists Convention at Indiana University of my own reconstruction of Giovanni Bottesini's (1821-1889) original orchestrations of five works for solo double bass and strings. The ISB is the most prestigious organization of bassists in the world. I performed these works accompanied by members of my former orchestra, The Columbus (OH) Symphony Orchestra. In summers 2013 and 2014 I travelled to Parma, Italy where I took 3656 photographs of Bottesini's original autograph manuscripts. From these manuscripts, I created urtext (original) editions of works for solo double bass including the original string orchestra accompaniments performed at this recital: Meditazione-Bach, Allegretto-Capriccio, Elegia in Re, Allegro di Concerto, and Introduction and Gavotte. These five pieces are the only works originally scored for string orchestra (not counting the Concerto No. 2, which I performed with the Lubbock Symphony in 2014). Some of the above orchestrations likely have not been heard or performed in at least 130 years since the composer's death.
