Using a model of homicide as a situated transaction, I describe the process by which a mother comes to interpret her infant’s action negatively and the crying becomes a challenge to her identity as a mother – a core, gender socialized identity. I explain this challenge as part of the anomic, unrealistic societal expectations of motherhood due to cultural inequality.
